If you’re looking to add a splash of color to your indoor jungle, look no further than the Syngonium podophyllum ‘Merry Maria’. This eye-catching variety of arrowhead vine combines velvety pinks, reds, and greens in a single leaf—offering bold contrast and a soft, lush texture that’s hard to resist.
Like other Syngoniums, ‘Merry Maria’ is low-maintenance, adaptable, and a fast grower, making it ideal for both beginner and experienced plant parents. Whether trailing from a hanging basket or climbing a moss pole, it adds movement, energy, and tropical warmth to any space.
Syngonium ‘Merry Maria’ thrives in bright in-direct light. A spot near an east or north facing window is perfect. While it can tolerate medium light, its vibrant coloration is best maintained with ample filtered sunlight. Too little light will cause your plant to become leggy and fade in color.
Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch its delicate, variegated leaves.
Syngonium prefers soil that’s evenly moist but not soggy. Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil of your plant feels dry to the touch. Reduce watering during the winter months when growth slows.
Overwatering can lead to root rot, while letting it dry out too much may cause the leaves to droop or crisp.
As a tropical plant, ‘Merry Maria’ loves humidity. It will thrive in 50% humidity or higher, though it can adapt to average indoor levels. Boost humidity with a humidifier, pebble tray, or regular misting—especially during dry seasons.
Keep the temperature between 65–80°F (18–27°C). Avoid drafts or sudden cold snaps, as temperatures below 55°F (13°C) can damage the plant.
Use a well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter. A blend of potting soil, perlite, and coco coir or orchid bark works well, allowing both moisture retention and proper airflow to the roots.
Make sure the pot has drainage holes, and repot every 1–2 years as it grows.
Feed your ‘Merry Maria’ every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring through early fall) with a balanced, diluted liquid houseplant fertilizer. Avoid fertilizing in winter when the plant’s growth slows.
Over-fertilizing can cause salt buildup and damage the roots, so less is more.
Syngonium starts as a compact plant but will begin to vine as it matures. You can let it trail, climb, or pinch it back to encourage bushier growth. Use a moss pole or trellis to support vertical growth and encourage larger, more mature leaf forms.
Prune leggy stems or faded leaves regularly to keep the plant looking full and healthy.
‘Merry Maria’ is easy to propagate via stem cuttings. Cut just below a node and root in water or moist soil. New roots typically develop within a few weeks, especially during spring and summer.
Once rooted, transplant into a small pot and resume regular care.
Like other Syngoniums, ‘Merry Maria’ is toxic to pets and humans if ingested. It contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation. Keep it out of reach of curious pets and small children.
