Staghorn ferns (aka Elkhorn ferns) are distinguished by their broad, flat fronds (leaves) with points or prongs on the tips that are reminiscent of the antlers of deer, elk, or antelopes.
These tropical ferns are epiphytic, meaning in the wild they like to grow on tree trunks and other structures. This allows them to be mounted to wall hangers and wooden plaques—like living art!
When grown outdoors, these plants require moderate shade and indirect light. However, when grown indoors (particularly in northern climates) they prefer bright and indirect light.
Since these plants like humidity, they are great for humid areas of the home. In the wild they can grow from 2-3 ft tall and up to 3 ft wide, but will remain more compact when grown indoors as houseplants.
These ferns can withstand hotter temperatures, but should be kept away from cold air vents and temperatures below 55°F.
Staghorn ferns are considered pet-friendly by the ASPCA, and are safe for both cats and dogs.
